MSP Member Update Vol. 9 No. 69
October 28, 2010
In This Issue: Bill 41 Regulations - 13 Issues Identified by MSP
The Manitoba Society of Pharmacists has focused on thirteen separate issues for most of the regulation development process. These issues were identified through the MSP member consultation process which was conducted over the summer of 2007. Each issue is the subject of an MSP Position Statement, and has been carefully considered by MPhA sub-committees, and served as the focal point of the PriceWaterhouseCoopers LLP (“PwC’) facilitation process and the PWC Working Group process which lead to the creation of the October regulations.
In an effort to inform members of the developments related to each of these thirteen issues, the MSP intends to review each one using the backdrop of the October 8th, 2010, Regulation Policy Document. Over the coming days leading up to the November 9th, 2010 deadline to vote, each of the thirteen issues will be considered in a brief summary which will be distributed via Communication Plus.
If you are curious about the information about you which will be available to the public, the pharmacist profiles issue is addressed below.
PHARMACIST PROFILES
The Pharmacist Profile is an example of an issue which has only required fine tuning. The provincial government long ago made the decision that the profiles of health professionals would be established and made available to the public. This practice has been followed by several provincial governments. Physicians have had their profiles available since 2005, and their regulations have essentially been copied in the October 8th, 2010, Regulation Policy Document.
There were two implementation issues which the MSP wanted addressed. It would seem prudent for every pharmacist to review their profile for accuracy before it becomes available to the public, and the benefit of including gender on the profile was questioned.
The MPhA has agreed to circulate to every licensed pharmacist a copy of their profile in advance of the profile becoming available to the public, and the Society appreciates this accommodation.
Members should also be aware that as currently written, the draft regulations allow all licensed pharmacists to request that their gender not be included in their profile. For a complete list of all information captured in pharmacist profiles view Sections 18 through 28.
