- Blueprint for Pharmacy
The Blueprint for Pharmacy is a landmark initiative in Canadian pharmacy with virtually universal support amongst pharmacy stakeholders across Canada. At the 2009 Manitoba Pharmacy Conference, Jeff Poston, Executive Director of the Canadian Pharmacists Association provided an overview on the commitment of the pharmacy community to realize the Vision for Pharmacy and the status of the Blueprint for Pharmacy implementation.
Given the significance of the Blueprint, Jeff Poston has agreed to provide a recap of the initiative with a focus on the developments over the past twelve months.
- Advancing Sustainable Community Pharmacy Models
Community Pharmacy is under tremendous economic pressures in certain countries and Canadian Provinces. As governments look for options to fund the ever increasing health demands of the population, community pharmacy has become an unfortunate target for achieving savings.
For decades professional allowances provided by generic drug manufacturers have subsidized community pharmacy practice. The fees associated with distributing medications alone do not provide pharmacies with the necessary revenue to operate the current community pharmacy practice model. There are recent examples of governments curtailing professional allowances using various policy initiatives.
Community pharmacies need to generate additional revenue through emerging opportunities. The current and expanding scope of practice, allow pharmacists to provide needed health services, but appropriate compensation is necessary to ensure sustainability.
Pharmacists familiar with today’s challenges will be brought together to discuss how community pharmacies outside and across Canada are responding. New models are available and some have already been introduced. The risks to community pharmacy in Manitoba are well understood, have others identified the necessary solutions? What lessons have been learned? How ready are Manitoba pharmacies to respond to a new economic environment?
The invited participants will share the knowledge gained through their own experiences. Following individual presentations, a panel discussion will allow all those in attendance to ask questions, provide opinions, and discuss the options available.
