In This Issue:      1. Notice to Pharmacists

Reminder antiviral medication supply and access

Pharmacies may be experiencing an increase in demand for Tamiflu (oseltamivir).  To accommodate patient needs kindly review your inventory levels to ensure that you have sufficient stock to provide treatment for patients.  For antiviral treatment to be effective, it should be administered as early as possible and preferentially within 48 hours of onset of illness.

The Code of Ethics notes that “pharmacists shall hold the health and safety of the public to be of first consideration in the practice of the profession of pharmacy rendering to each patient the full measure of their ability as an essential health care practitioner.”

Therefore in the event that you do not have stock available there is an expectation that the pharmacist support the patient in the expedient procurement of the product to ensure access to the appropriate treatment.
