Working for You

The Manitoba Society of Pharmacists is a non-profit voluntary advocacy organization committed to working for its members on a wide range of issues including reimbursement for professional services, managed care and legislative/regulatory change. The Society recently undertook a strategic planning session, which identified a new Vision, Mission and objectives. As part of MSP's 40th anniversary celebration, a new logo was also developed.

These measures will provide the Society with the focus and direction to support pharmacists as they face new challenges and experience change to both their practice and the current economic model. As pharmacies experience the effects of generic drug price reform in Manitoba, it is imperative that pharmacists speak with a unified voice.

The next year has the potential to deliver great change to the profession. MSP has developed a three-prong approach to support pharmacists through this change.

1. The Government Relations Committee will advocate for recognition and compensation for professional pharmacy services with the Government of Manitoba.

2. The Professional Relations Committee will identify new opportunities to support, develop, and provide resources that will encourage pharmacists to align themselves with the future and strive for excellence.

3. The Public Relations Committee has already begun the process of supporting pharmacists by developing a comprehensive communication strategy that has allowed them to broaden their audience.

Pharmacists must be well positioned to highlight and embrace emerging practice trends as health care demands increase and we hope you recognize the importance of advocacy, education and public awareness. Membership ensures that MSP remains a driving force in practice change and enhanced patient care and safety.

If you are not currently a member of MSP, consider the benefits for you and your profession. If you are already a member, continued support of your professional association is necessary as we move towards the future and embrace the expanded scope of pharmacy practice.

Why become a member?

The Society's mission is to enhance the recognition and compensation of professional services while inspiring excellence in practice. Our vision is to unify and advance the pharmacy profession. Whether you are an employee pharmacist, an employer pharmacist, a hospital pharmacist, or a non-practising pharmacist, there are many excellent reasons to be a member of your professional organization. To be a successful organization and to achieve our mission and vision, the Society needs you as a member.

The Manitoba Society of Pharmacists met with the Minister of Health in April and has her commitment to work collaboratively to develop a framework for reimbursement for professional pharmacy services.

Public Relations

The Manitoba Society of Pharmacists (MSP) requests that all pharmacists once again contribute to the Public Relations Committee. The committee will use the Public Relations Fund to consistently promote a strong, positive image of pharmacists to the public and stakeholders through the design, marketing, promotion and delivery of communication campaigns that are developed in partnership with stakeholders.

The role of a pharmacist has evolved beyond the procurement and dispensing of medications and as health care demands increase and the practice evolves, it is necessary to be well positioned to highlight pharmacists' expertise. The Public Relations Committee is focused on developing a communication strategy that embraces emerging practice trends and educates the public about the valuable services that pharmacists provide.

The Public Relations Committee spent considerable time researching and developing the tagline "Talk to Your Pharmacist. A Healthy Choice". The funds raised through the membership drive are used for advertising campaigns to facilitate public awareness of the role and value of pharmacists. Campaigns are run twice annually and align with Pharmacists Awareness Month in March and Canadian Patient Safety Week in the fall.

As a licensed pharmacist you are well aware of the importance of educating the public and others about the services pharmacists provide. All pharmacists should benefit from this campaign and it is important that all pharmacists contribute to this common effort. Your support is critical.
